Activated sludge is a biological wastewater treatment process that is used in a membrane bioreactor (MBR), which combines membrane processes like microfiltration or ultrafiltration with them. Wastewater treatment in municipalities and businesses now frequently uses it. The two main MBR configurations are (1) submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) and (2) side stream membrane bioreactor. The membrane in the first configuration is submerged in the wastewater and is housed inside the biological reactor. In the latter configuration, the membrane is situated outside the reactor and is applied as a final step following biological treatment. Various substances can pass through a membrane on a selective basis. The goal in water purification or regeneration is for the water to flow through the membrane while retaining undesirable particles on the other side. More effective pollutant retention may be achieved depending on the kind of membrane. The membrane may be produced using several sorts of materials. Although there are fewer materials required to build a membrane in the field of wastewater treatment than there are in other disciplines, this is because of several operating constraints. Some of the qualities needed in a membrane for wastewater treatment include chemical and mechanical resistance for five years of use, highly acidic or basic properties, or the ability to function in a wide pH range.
