Clean water, more effective use of water systems , and the use of water as a reagent or reaction media are all concerns that may be addressed by catalysis, which is a fundamental technology. Recognized across government and the Research Councils is the fact that water is a definite priority. Due to its strong activity and greater selectivity compared to traditional technologies, and the ability to produce chemicals that are non-toxic or significantly less hazardous, the treatment of water pollutants by heterogeneously catalysed reduction reaction is a topic of considerable interest. This article examines the use of catalytic reduction as a progressive method to eliminate various kinds of water pollutants. It discusses hydrodehalogenation for the treatment of wastewater and hydrogenation of nitrate/nitrite for the remediation of groundwater in the case of hydrodehalogenation, already used treatment methods is given together with an evaluation of the benefits of catalytic reduction over the established techniques. A careful review of the necessary literature is done before considering catalyst design for workable catalytic processes. Water pollutants containing nitrate and nitrite are the major focus of hydrogenation. The preparation process for a number of significant nitrate reduction catalysts and their catalytic effectiveness.
