The chemicals used as feedstock in the chemical industry are known as biorenewable chemicals since they are produced by living things. The carbon feedstocks now used by the chemical industry, which are derived from petroleum, may one day be replaced by solar-powered renewable compounds. The immense variety of enzymes found in biological organisms and the ability for synthetic biology to alter these enzymes to develop novel chemical activities have the potential to be the driving forces behind the chemical industry. The polyketide biosynthetic pathway is an essential tool for the creation of new molecules because it produces compounds with repeating alkyl chain units that have the potential for a wide variety of functional groups at the different carbon atoms.
