Title : Taurine: An Eco-friendly Bio Catalyst & more

Abstract:

The biological output of a molecule depends on its physical - chemical characters .However, chemicals are not single minded and in differ environment they may change their behaviour leading to mostly desired outcome. In zest biocatalyst utilize living systems in total or their parts to accelerate the process; in other words catalyze the chemical activity or reaction. In these processes it’s ‘inside’ story cantered on enzymes involve in chemical transformations of organic molecule. In such conditions enzyme which are isolated and enzyme which are still inside living cells both participate in catalytic activity. Taurine –Chemically (2 Amino ethane sulfonic acid) is a sulphur containing amino acid which is isolated about 200 hundred years ago from ox bile. Is a multi-facial molecule and also regarded as molecule of the millennium due to its utility as a therapeutic agent and as well as component of functional food & nutriceutical . In addition to its convincing role in vital organs of human and other mammalians, it is now used as bio organic catalyst for promoting chemical reactions. For example Knoevenagel reaction between aldehydes and malononitrile . There are number of other similar reactions like tetra ketones have been produced, .barbiturates and Thiobarbiturates were synthesized. In addition Pyrano pyrimidinone derivatives through three component reaction between aldehydes (thio)barbituric and malononitrile have been developed .Taurine and various  sugars like Glucose on pyrolysis ; in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) produces versatile solid acids. Three component reactions were further strengthening by using Isatins, hydantoin and β –diketones utilizing taurine. Using the same catalyst eco friendly derivatives of coumarine have been also synthesized.

Audience take away

  • All such synthesized compounds have value addition due to their importance in food, drugs pharmaceutical and fine chemicals.
  • Use of taurine as a bio- catalyst has opened a new dimension in catalysis research & use. Success of eco-friendly reactions in greenest possible conditions are the motive behind such reactions. These reactions also resulted to produce higher yields in acceptable reaction times. The greatest attractions of these reactions are that catalyst can be recycled with high efficiency.
  • In zest apart from therapeutic important; this new role of taurine is unique to it, being a strong hydrophilic, water is only solvent require hence no need of other organic solvents; even in separation  or purification no organic solvent is needed .In a matter of fact reusability of taurine is common in all such reactions   which further reduces the cost of catalyst utilized.
